Action Shooting Facility Qualification
Candidate Prerequisites
- Candidate must successfully complete either the Virtual Safety & Rules Overview or the in-person Rules Class.
- Candidate must successfully complete the Virtual ASF Safety Briefing.
- Candidate must already be Pistol Qualified for use of handguns within the Bays.
- Candidate must already be Rifle Qualified for use of rifles within the Bays.
- Candidate must already be Shotgun Qualified for use of shotguns within the Bay.
Firearm Requirements for Qualification
- Candidate must qualify using a centerfire handgun.
- Candidate must qualify using a centerfire long gun (rifle or shotgun).
- If Candidate chooses to use a shotgun, only slugs may be used.
Requirements to Pass Qualification
- No time limits, as qualification is meant for Candidates to demonstrate safe gun handling during Action Shooting.
- No round count limits. Use as many rounds as necessary to achieve at least two hits on each target.
- Candidate may use any sighting system they prefer on both the Handgun and Long Gun Qualifications (red dot, irons, etc.).
- Candidate must always demonstrate safe gun handling, including:
- When moving on the course of fire, your finger must be outside of the trigger guard when not actively engaging a target;
- Your muzzle may not go above the height of the berm at any point (including while reloading or showing clear); and
- You must not violate the 180-Degree Plane at any point (including when holstering/unholstering)
- Handgun targets require a minimum of 2 hits per target (28 hits total across 14 targets). Misses are not penalized.
- Long Gun targets require a minimum of 2 hits per target (28 hits total across 14 targets). Misses are not penalized.
- Candidates may be allowed one ‘make-up’ run in the same day for non-safety disqualifications. This will be allowed only after all other Candidates have attempted their initial qualification attempts.
Starting Position
- Handgun loaded to capacity (or less, if desired), holstered, and enough additional magazines, speed loaders, or rounds to complete the course of fire (28 minimum, no maximum). A reload is mandatory, though can be performed at the Candidate’s preference.
- Long Gun loaded with no more than 10 rounds to start, safety on, held at Low/Compressed-Ready, and enough additional magazines (loaded to capacity), or rounds, to complete the course of fire (28 minimum, no maximum).
Stage Procedure
- Candidate will start at designated location at the center of the bay.
- Upon command, Candidate will draw their handgun and engage the designated handgun target array, moving through the course and reloading as necessary.
- Once all handgun targets have been engaged to the Candidate’s satisfaction, Candidate will then follow the instructions given by the Qualification Officer.
- If the Candidate wishes to attempt the Long Gun portion, they will then return to the starting location and prepare for the next course of fire
- Candidate will start at designated location at the center of the bay.
- Upon command, Candidate will use their long gun and engage the designated long gun target array, moving through the course and reloading as necessary.
- Once all long gun targets have been engaged to the Candidate’s satisfaction, Candidate will then follow the instructions given by the Qualification Officer.
- Upon command, the targets will then be scored and reset for the next Candidate.
Safety Violations
These result in immediate qualification failure for that Action Type.
No re-attempt will be allowed on the same day.
- Muzzle points above the Backstop or Side Berm at any time
- Muzzle breaks the 180-Degree Plane at any time, including during the drawing of a handgun from a holster or re-holstering
- Muzzle “sweeps” yourself or anyone else at any time
- A round impacts the Backstop or Side Berm above the mulch line
- A round impacts a railroad tie or the gravel Bay floor
- Finger remains inside the trigger guard when moving and not actively engaging a target
- A round is fired when given the command “Hammer Down” after shooting has been completed, indicating the chamber was not clear and the firearm was not rendered “safe”
- Failure to listen to and comply with the Qualification Officer’s instructions
Additional Violations
These result in qualification failure for that Action Type.
One re-attempt may be allowed on the same day at the discretion of the Qualification Officer(s).
- Candidate does not meet the scoring minimums
- Candidate fires a round while outside of the shooter’s boundary
- Candidate shoots through a barricade to engage a target
- A round impacts a target not designated for the firearm type the Candidate is using
- A round strikes a second target after traveling through the Candidate’s intended target
- A round travels through an unintended target before striking the Candidate’s intended target
